NEW YORK AUTO INSURANCE PLAN
Total Residual Market Written Premium (000 omitted)

People who cannot get insurance coverage for their cars and commercial vehicles such as trucks and cabs can purchase insurance through the state’s assigned risk plan called New York Auto Insurance Plan (NYAIP). In an assigned risk plan, all insurers selling auto insurance in the state are assigned drivers to insure, based on the amount of insurance they sell in the regular market. The amount of coverage written in the NYAIP has risen significantly in recent years due to the high incidence of fraud in the no-fault auto insurance system.
