S.554 DeFrancisco / A.8762 Rules (Vetoed Memo #45) Repeals section 474-a of the Judiciary Law relating to contingent fees for attorneys in claims or actions for medical, dental or podiatric malpractice. If enacted this bill would repeal the entire sliding fee schedule currently utilized and eliminate any cap on attorney fees. NYIA opposed this bill and wrote to the Governor in opposition. A.10352-A Tonko / S.6830 Seward (Vetoed Memo #59) Amends the Insurance Law and the State Finance Law in relation to enforcement of housing maintenance codes. The bill would provide that funds raised from the fire insurance fee (1.25% fee on commercial fire insurance premiums) be used solely for state aid to municipalities for the enforcement of fire prevention, building and housing maintenance codes, the state multiple dwelling law, and the state multiple residence law. Commencing April 1, 2001, not less than one-half of the moneys from such fee would be provided to municipalities for code enforcement and commencing April 1, 2002 all of such moneys would be provided to municipalities for code enforcement purposes. |
